Magdalene Odundo

The Journey of Things

Born in Kenya, British designer Magdalene Odundo studied originally in graphic arts before discovering pottery.
She crafts her pieces by coiling rather than wheel throwing and burnishes all of them carefully by hand creating
remarkable finished products with a nod to old world techniques.

The Journey of Things showcases dozens of inspirational historic works mixed with Odundo’s original
masterpieces exemplifying her belief that ‘historic and contemporary art exist as a continuum.’
Text supplements include interviews and critiques of her craft and design ethos.

Featured are 44 of Odundo’s original vessels as well as pieces from Barbara Hepworth, Henry Moore,
Henri Gaudier-Brzeska, Lucie Rie, Jean Arp. Ancient vessels from Greece and Egypt, historic ceramics
from Africa, Asia and Central America, and ritual objects from across the African continent offer a wide
source of inspiration that have informed Odundo’s work.
